Don't Flip Flop on this Issue: Get a Mammogram

Mather Hospital and Suffolk County National Bank (SCNB) are teaming up through a new fundraising and community health program called “Don’t Flip Flop; Get a Mammogram.” As part of the promotion that begins May 1 - just in time for Mother’s Day - SCNB is reminding women to have their annual mammogram by selling a pretty pink flip flop pin for $15 at each of its 26 branches on Long Island, until supplies last. Proceeds benefit the Fortunato Breast Health Center and breast cancer treatment at Mather Hospital.

The pin was designed by Long Island jewelry designer, Lori Rae Silvers, who survived breast cancer in 2002 and is determined to help educate others on the importance of early detection. The pin is a take off of the pink breast cancer ribbon, and shaped into a flip-flop to express Lori Rae’s love for the beach.

Pictured is Suffolk County National Bank Vice Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer, Thomas S. Kohlmann, with an oversized replica of the pretty pink pin, which, beginning May 1 can be purchased for $15 at any of SCNB’s 26 branches on Long Island. Mr. Kohlmann is also wearing the pin on his suit jacket lapel.

Jewelry designer devotes energies to fight against Breast Cancer

Long Beach, NY August 2004 – In 2002, jewelry designer Lori Rae Silvers' life took an unexpected detour when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Today Lori Rae is cancer free and is determined to help educate others on the importance of early detection in the fight against breast cancer.

Lori Rae, a Long Beach, NY resident has created an unusual and lighthearted piece of jewelry as an appealing variation of the pink breast ribbon. The piece is an expression of her experience with her illness and is dedicated to the sisterhood of women who share in the experience. Lori Rae's piece can be purchased for $15.00; a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a breast cancer foundation for research, education and awareness.

"I designed this stylish piece as a subtle reminder to give hope to others in the battle against breast cancer," said Lori Rae Silvers. "I hope that my contribution will help others stricken with disease to have the opportunities I did for a successful recovery."

Born into the gold and diamond business, Lori Rae was drawn to the decorative and performing arts. After following her passions as a figure skater and dancer, Lori Rae used her arts education and began a lucrative career in jewelry design. Her elegant and simple designs that flow with movement and color soon developed a successful following with an impressive clientele.

Lori Rae's work has been featured in many national publications and fine boutiques and stores around the world. Her pieces have appeared on several soap operas. Lori Rae left the fast paced life in Manhattan eight years ago and moved to a home by the beach, in Long Beach, NY with her husband. Many of Lori Rae's designs are inspired by her love for the ocean.
